| Perhaps the most well-developed
micronation is Talossa, which was founded in 1979 by R. Ben Madison,
then a high-school student in Wisconsin. The nation began as Madison's
solo attempt to found "a perfect society," but in time it absorbed
several friends who had once derided Talossa as "Ben's fantasy
country." (source) |
On 14 October 2002, HM Cesidio Tallini
has officially renounced any citizenship, nationality, and/or
affiliation with the micronational world. Having been banned from the
two major micronational group sites, HM Cesidian Tallini has become, in
effect, the World's First King to be literally sent into exile from
cyberspace! HM Cesidio Tallini ... joins a long list of Princes and
Kings who have been banned from ever entering real nations.

| Freedonia is not the only micronation to
have declared its sovereignty in the past five years. The most
comprehensive web listing of micronations contains 118 entries; only a
handful predate 1995. This recent surge in do-it-yourself statecraft is
entirely due to the establishment of the Internet, a vast and uncharted
terra incognita with boundless tolerance for far-fetched ideas. (source) |
Fifth World nations are often ethnic
nations, whereas in micronations ethnicity matters very little. The
Fifth World ethnicity may either be neotraditional, or entirely novel,
and the same feature ... applies to race. However important ethnicity
is in the Fifth World, it is important to realise that it has
absolutely no place or meaning in micronations or in the micronational
community.

| Though micronationalism, at first sight,
can seem risible, the question is: why is there (or should there be)
any fundamental difference between a recently-imagined community (to
use Benedict Anderson's term) or a "traditional" community? Is there
any fundamental difference, other than a durable tradition - and if a
micronation should last long enough, would it not then be no different
from any other nation? (source) |
Fifth World nations have more than the
club-like environment of your typical Internet micronation, since they
have developed extensive and original cultures of their own. A great
deal of cultural development is going on in the Fifth World, and if
current trends continue, future societies of the Western World may come
to resemble the webindigeneous Fifth World more and more.

| Defining micronationalism is an
extremely difficult task - particularly since micronationalism as a
phenomenon spans a wide spectrum of subphenomena. Furthermore,
micronationalism is invested with widely varying meanings by its
participants. There is in the micronational community no single version
of the semantic content of the word "micronation". (source) |
| It should be noted that if your nation
has been around for 5 years, as is the case of fairly old TTF-Bucksfan,
still active and strong as it ever was, that hardly constitutes a
'history.' Even respectable company histories are usually longer than
that. If the race of which your people is comprised of is the Indigo
race, a phenotype more than a genotype, although it is a true
phenotype, this is hardly universally accepted as a 'race.' The fact
most of your people speak English, hardly constitutes an autochthonous
'language' in any shape or form, since English is a first or native
language in many countries, and practically a second or auxiliary
language worldwide. If the favourite food of your nation is chocolate,
that hardly constitutes a 'culture.' If you follow a fairly orthodox
faith, such as Christianity in its various forms, or no faith
whatsoever, that hardly constitutes an autochthonous 'religion.' (source) |
| [T]he surface impression of
micronationalism is that of a number of groups of adults, playacting
imaginary nations. This impression is so eye-catching that it quite
often completely obscures the fact that there is a deeper current of
activity in the micronational community. For some, it is indeed a game
- but others are serious, to some extent, about their endeavours to
create a nation. (source) |
| Friend, you are not a 'living organism'
according to the biologists of UNPO; you are, at best, a cell, or maybe
tiny group of cells, that have fairly recently separated from the
living organism called a First, Second, or Third World nation. No, you
are not an eardrum, which may be important to the 'Command Centre' of
the living organism, you are not a finger, not even the stinky
genitals! You are just a cell, or a few cells, that have recently
separated from the living organism, that act like a missing eardrum,
but really aren't, and actually you are so irrelevant that even the
undemocratic living organism you separated from doesn't feel threatened
by you, or by the lack of you! By the way, good luck: now you are going
to have to live outside of the living organism all by yourself! (source) |
| For some, micronationalism is a mere
hobby - an extended game of role-playing. Others take it somewhat more
seriously, viewing micronationalism as a political simulation - their
primary motivation for taking part in the micronational community is
... to gain insight into the political process, with a view to making
use of this experience in a 'real-world' context. Yet another group
takes the micronational project much more seriously - it is their
ambition to achieve statehood, if possible. (source) |
| Jus cerebri electronici states that the
jurisdiction under which a server or client falls is not determined by
the territory on which the server lies, or even the territory on which
it was built, but by the hypercitizenship or citizenship of the owner
of the server or client. Jus cerebri electronici states that the owner
of the server or client exercises higher title and jurisdiction because
Roman law (jus sanguinis/jus soli) doesn't apply at all to the
Internet, but rather Cesidian law (jus cerebri electronici). Any
territorial nation's claim to the Internet based on the location of a
server or client is in fact illegitimate. (source) |
